Managed by Mr Bahrami, the year 11 football team defeated Wellington Road School to reach the Trafford Cup Final against Sale Grammar School on Friday 18 May at the Partington Sports Centre. The match was a very tight affair with both teams playing well. After conceding a first half goal from a set piece, Sale High started the second half like a house on fire and were quickly level after a teasing cross into the box from Will Merryman was met by a fine diving header from team captain Matthew O’Brien.
The game ebbed and flowed but unfortunately Sale High were undone once again from a set piece, this time a ball scrambled in after a Sale Grammar corner had caused confusion in our box. Pushing forward to grab an equaliser we were always going to leave ourselves open to a counter attack and Sale Grammar duly obliged with a third shortly before the end. The goal had a touch of fortune about it after a clearance was deflected into the path of the Sale Grammar player 6 yards out from goal.
Sale Grammar 3 Sale High School 1 was the final score, however, we played some great football and the behaviour of the students was impeccable. So much so that Chairman of Trafford boys football, Kevin Speake, made a special mention of it in his post-match presentation.
